sebbie

Because English is not a mother tongue in me, it is not possible to explain in detail.
A small bikini was about 20 years general ago.
However, the bathing suit like the half pants is general now.
The lifeguard is not an exception.

Default explanation

Well done in English - understood - and you sadly describe a trend in Japan which we have seen so often elsewhere.

Default re Waterboys

Waterboys is best watched on http://www.dailymotion.com
in English translation subtitles.

They have the 3 tv series.
Youtube had most of it but has lost some and the tv series are in short sections not whole episodes.

The file for the movie is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5LT_wV78MQ

The files for the first tv series is http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqa...2#.UKfFEeRSjIw

The files for 2nd tv series is:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqa...n#.UKfGT-RSjIw

The files for the 3rd tv series is: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xqj...n#.UKfEm-RSjIw

The movie starts with a boy losing a swimming race and squatting in tears in the showers, it ends with many boys in tears as they complete the synchronised swim dance routine in front of a huge audience. They were magnificent.

The first tv series is the same school 2 years later deciding to end the now popular boy's synchro display and about the boys who refuse to be stopped.

The 2nd tv series is about a boy who arrives in a strange town to live with his grandfather. The school he goes to has 32 boys and 300 girls. During breaks the boys hide in the observation tower and the girls rule the grounds. One of the boys demands that the newcomer is their saviour and as a swimmer from Tokyo he should start a swimming club to lead the boys out of girl domination. Forced to compete in a swimming race our hero nearly drowns and his swim briefs fall off, leaving him unconscious and naked. A camp teacher (one of the boys from the movie) rescues him, and by demonstrating synchro for him shows there is more to swimming than races.

In the 3rd tv series one of the boys from the first tv series, now a student, falls asleep and misses an exam and is sent to an island in the south to do work experience instead to complete his year. His father blames syncho for his failure to get into medical school. The island head wants to put on a synchro show to attract tourists, the coach he hires (from the movie and 1st tv series) recognises the student, gets pregnant (again) and leaves. Our student is forced to coach the syncro team consisting of boys that don't care. With the island about to be taken over by a corporation he manages to put together the synchro show just in time, making everyone cheer and cry.

Don't watch these videos, you will end up with the theme tunes stuck in your head, Sugar Baby Love and something in Japanese.

If you ignore the warning above, don't try to watch it all in one weekend, there is far too much.

Default Excellent

I agree - and hope also that Louis is watching.
He had trouble with that link freezing and I too
was getting a Japanese war film before I could
find WaterBoys after many attempts.

Default Square cuts somewhat common

A few years ago I went to Japan on a high school exchange program. During our P.E. at the school I was assigned, the guys surprisingly wore a lot of square cut briefs as opposed to the baggy board shorts I had heard were becoming more popular. While the square-cuts are somewhat hot, they don't beat speedo briefs, of which there were none

Not sure what the swimsuit style is right now. Although brief-style swimwear isn't frowned upon, I hear boardies are dominating the scene in Japan.
