I remember playing water polo and we always wore two suits that were about 2 sizes too small. We wanted them as tight as possible so the opponent couldn't get a hold of them and pull you under. If there was anything to grab on they would and either pull you under or rip the suit trying to (the reason for 2 suits). That was also the reason we wore only the nylon. They had no stretch left after we pulled them on and was impossible to grab any fabric -- lycra always seemed to have a little to grab no matter how tight. The suits would start out about 3 inches on the side but by the time we stretched them on they were down to 1.5 or 2 inches.
