Those TYR briefs are very smart and I'm sure fit you well.
Try something with a 1" side before you consider wearing a swim thong.
A swim thong under your shorts in the gym might be fun, the other guys would see you changing into them and you would enjoy sensing their looks, but wearing them in the pool may be a step too far until you know that they are not banned and the other guys would accept you in them.
Is this gym and pool just men only or is it a bit gay too ?

It might be better to wait until summer and to find a quite beach or lake where you can experiment with a swim thong. A thong can be fun at home too.

It's a regular run down gym/pool, but mainly is older guys.

Yeah, stay with the briefs for the gym. A thong would be very odd there.
