Well, I think, for me, the awkwardness would come from having to walk through their circle to get to the key. It is one thing to be at the pool with others in a Speedo, it is another to have to disturb them and walk through their conversation area while wearing one. It would draw attention to yourself. That attention drawing is what would make me feel awkward.
