I didn't even read the article -- when they illustrate the subject using 20 year old pictures it is hard to think they have any grasp of the subject.

In San Francisco, I've seen young guys in short shorts at least three times in three different places over the past three days.

Two of them were wearing some kind of factory made pre-cut shorts. However, one of them was wearing what appeared to be a mid thigh cut-off version of Nike or Adidas basketball knee length shorts.

The shorter look is now getting into volleyball:

The leg views start around 2:00.

Default volleyball

If my memory serves me correctly, volleyball shorts were extremely short in the era of short shorts for sports in general and got long more gradually than in other sports, notably basketball and soccer.
In beach volleyball most men wear long board shorts but shorter shorts and even speedos are allowed and seen occasionally. I know a beach volleyball player who knows someone who always competes in speedos and he thinks that gives him an advantage.

Today, I saw a couple more guys out in shorts shorts.

Looks like the style is gaining momentum slowly but surely.

I'm also thinking about starting a diary just to keep track of the trend.

I was in London on Monday evening, quite a lot of guys walking around in fairly short shorts, making the long shorts look out of place.
Long trousers and short shorts have always looked smart while long short tend to look a bit crap.

That's the idea: Long shorts are now beginning to look out of place just like they've been doing to short shorts for the past 15 years.

Now the tide is turning on them and it reminds me of the old saying "Karma's A Bitch"!!!

I always find it interesting when an article uses a 20 year old picture as a reference.
Lately I have found a variety of lengths of shorts when I have shopped. It seems that a happy medium between the long below the knees and the short short like the old gym trunks or nylon running shorts. After the skinny jean fiasco, I think that manufacturers are realizing that variety of lengths is good.
