There's a naturist camp near Cap Ferret called La Jenny, the happy campers travel some distance from their site to the beach access along the long distance coastal cycle path. I was quietly hiking the coastal cycle path in speedos with a heavy camping pack and noticed I was being passed in both directions by stark naked cyclists. Their bikes weren't particularly good, the French seem to have a class of almost expendable beach bikes that grind sand into all moving parts, suggesting these cyclists were more interested in naturism than cycling.
If you are allergic to your cycling shorts maybe a week or 2 at La Jenny would do you good!

I once had some cotton Lycra, it's thicker than cycle/swim Lycra but it might get around your issues. I do have a sewing pattern for 4 panel cycle shorts somewhere. It might dodge your issues.
