This short video, from Sam Fricker, the British diver, discusses swapping Speedos, or Swimmers after a swim, which is apparently commonplace after a competitive swim in Great Britain. Does this happen in the US or in other countries?

It took me a few times to understand what they were saying, but it would be like many other professions, where you trade or swap parts of your uniform. I know people who collect police shoulder patches, which identify where they patrol. The brief swapping with other teams seems a bit intimate, but if you are accustomed to that being the "uniform" of the sport.... Then that is all you have available to swap.

The thing which first sparked my interest in speedos as a child was the realization that they inhabited a grey area between underwear and outerwear while never being fully one or the other.
I guess high level competitive divers have spent so much time in speedos with other guys that they think of them entirely as sportswear. No different to swapping football jerseys. Very liberated thinking I wish more men were like that. |

If you admire someone you often wish to imitate them, you see a swimmer who has broken away from boring black or navy speedos and you immediately want a matching pair of the bright red or yellow ones he is wearing.
Imagine him meeting you later in the showers, both naked side by side under the warm water jets, your 2 pairs of speedos hanging on hooks behind you. "Nice speedos" you comment "I really like the colour", "Try them on" he says, "it's ok", you try them on and feel their tightness around your waist, you look down and see the bright colour and styling, your mouth falls open and the shower water sprays in. "You look good in them too" he says grabbing your plain black speedos and trying them on then pulling a towel over his shoulders and walking away, "Keep and enjoy them" he calls back to you. Once home you hang them up to dry, feeling the damp fabric in your hands. At bed time you sneak down to the airer grab the almost dry speedos and run back to your room. You can't wait to put them on again, to see yourself in them in the mirror, you wear them in bed and make them yours, thinking of him all the time. |
