My early speedo memories are from when I was 8 or 9, having those thick nylon swim briefs. Then at boarding school I was given an actual 'speedo' swim brief in school colours of blue with contrasting yellow stripe down both sides. This was in Germany, where at the time some men wore very brief swim bikinis. This brief was made from a very soft nylon fabric and had very narrow sides, with a seamed pouch and when not being worn the elastic around the waist and legs caused the brief to shrink to a tiny garment which obviously stretched when worn. Looking back it looked quite obscene when worn, leaving a very bulbous bulge, which left little to the imagination. I absolutely loved wearing this brief. In those days, no one seemed to notice how tiny it was.

And I believe that in some European countries, men in tiny swim briefs are sill more common than in the US.
