By the time guys turn 16, most guys have been experimenting with self-pleasuring for three or four years, and are moving more and more into the idea of engaging in partner sex. The whole navigation process for this 16-year old is every bit as difficult for the 16-year old who is considering the possibility that he might be gay as it is for the guy who believes he is straight. The first step in this process is definitely not having partner sex with another guy, any more than the first step for a 16-year old straight guy is to rush out and have partner sex with a girl. There are messy emotional issues to deal with regardless of the gender the guy is pursuing. For the potentially gay guy, this gets all messed together first with the issues of self-acceptance but then the question of possibly coming out to peers, parents and siblings, and how doing so might affect one’s daily life and future plans.

Then there is another problem that not every 16-year old guy neatly fits into one box or another of being either straight or gay. A lot of guys fall somewhere in between the two categories. Look at Bill and Joe to see what I mean here. Both consider themselves to be straight, and have a sexual interest in women. But for two completely straight guys, they have been certainly having a lot of fun in the company of each other in their dorm room, even though what they have been doing with each other in the dorm room has not involved any direct physical connection (aka gay sex) with each other. Are Bill and Joe both really straight arrows, or could things be a lot more complicated that both had realized? Does Bill get turned on just by realizing Joe is turned on? Does Joe get turned on when he realizes that Bill is enjoying himself? If this is happening, what does this mean for their sexuality? This is a most interesting issue that will be developed further in coming chapters.

Dylan, of course, is the quiet one and, if you haven’t guessed yet, something of a loner. Dylan has never engaged in partner sex with anyone. Not that he hasn’t thought about it for sure.
