A thong has waist material and fabric connectig the pouch to the back waist, An actual g-string is just a pouch held on by strings - I remember my first - a pouch cut off a jockstrap and a shoe lace. They werestarted by strippers in the 20's. Nked was illegal so the girls wore them so be as naked as possible. In the 40's and 50's men adopted the minimal coverage for photos.
