It appears there is a film about the making of the Water Boys movie and a book about the TV series Water Boys 2.
Trouble is although you can buy the book on Amazon it's in Japanese and I don't speak Japanese.

The Water Boys movie was made in 2001, there was a problem at the time of Japanese school boys committing suicide under pressure from teachers and other students in a system that blamed the boy at the bottom of the class for holding the whole class back. School pupils were told that boy is holding you back and ruining your chance of going to university. Watch the movie Full Metal Jacket 1987 to get a feel of what was going on in Japanese schools. Instructor Corporals at Deep Cut Barracks in England failed to realise that it was an anti war movie and used it as a training manual and there were deaths from gunshots at the barracks.
There is a reference to Japanese school boy suicides in the Pink Floyd album The Final Cut 1983.

I understand the movie was commissioned to demonstrate to young people that were failing at school that they were capable of something that made them valuable people. Don't kill yourself, set up an all boys synchronized swimming team.
