We always bought Speedos for my son when he was younger, but he stopped wanting to wear them when he was 7 or 8. He wore them under shorts for about a year and then stopped altogether. I'd always offer to get him one when we were swimsuit shopping, but he was never interested. As he got older, he started to get embarrassed by having a dad that wears a Speedo.
It's funny how different kids can be even when they grow up in the same family. My daughter shares none of my son's modesty. She and my wife won't hesitate to wear micro bikinis, and my daughter is completely open with us when it comes to her body. She's home from college for the winter break. Just this morning, I went to wake my kids up for breakfast. My daughter tossed off her sheets revealing her nude body. My son, on the other hand, was wearing pajama pants and a shirt.
Like you and your sister, my kids share a jack-and-jill bathroom that connects their bedrooms. My son has a hard time when she's home, because he has no desire to be seen naked by his sister. My daughter, however, seems to lose her clothes whenever she's in the bathroom. It's especially hard for my son when we go on vacation and share a room. Since my wife, daughter, and I sleep nude, we're frequently naked in the room. He still changes his clothes in the bathroom.
I'd love to get him more comfortable with his body and back into speedos. Your story gives me hope that it could happen one day.
