I will soon be installing an 8' privacy fence around our pool.
Should I continue to wear mainly brief suits to maintain an obvious tan line and be proper for unexpected company?
Invest in thongs and bare an tan my rear while keeping the most sensitive parts covered?
Skip the suit completely?

How unexpected ? - wouldn't you get a ring at the door bell as a prior warning of visitors and so, being in the last state, have an opportunity to quickly revert to item one at hand for modesty when circumstances require?

I've got a real similar situation. Here lately, I've just been throwing caution to the wind and wearing what I feel comfortable in. Aside from a peeking neighbor I don't give being caught, wearing little or nothing, much thought. If I have a visitor that pops into my backyard unannounced then they have no one but themselves to blame if they are offended by what they see. Not to mention I have a German Shepherd in my yard that usually deters anyone from strolling through. Now, if I expect company, I obviously will not be in the buff.

Is this question really about what you should wear or about tan line definition?
In a public shower situation a speedo tanline may gain you admiration and toleration, a very brief bikini tanline will make other guys wonder what you have been up to, a thong tanline will make the straight guys worried and the gay guys step closer and an all over tan makes guys have to decide whether you were born that colour or have been naked out in the sun.
Some people always wear a watch while sunbathing on holiday to create a reference sample for their friends when they come back.
In the days when schools had compulsory showers after PE and games the children of naturists would become nervous of going naked, not because they minded being seen naked on the beach or at a club, but because they might get obvious all over tans when they got back to school and were seen in the showers.
In the privacy of your own enclosure wear whatever you feel happy and confident in, but test out a least one swim thong for that feeling of the front being tightly held while the water flows sensuously over your buttocks.
Wearing different suits each day may mess up your tan lines but will certainly add a little excitement and arousal to your sessions.

It's a combination of comfort , (nude) concern for unannounced visitors (bikini) and wanting to know how my tan has progressed.

Thanks for the comments. I got 3 nude and 1 mixed, a little surprising to me since this is a swimsuit board. I also posted on a nudity
board and thong board. Nudity one was 11 nude and 1 mixed, more or less as expeected. No responses from thong.

I interpreted the "he" in post 7 to be referring to me but now see that it was probably a response to post 6. Still a little surprising that no one on a swimsuit board recommended speedos only.

LOL - a little humor between Shaulis and me was somewhat obscure perhaps and he couldn't mean you as pictured as he doesn't know what you look like. Similarly I had to find a photo not of you (and I have no idea who that guy is) but simply representational of a fourth option for you in your dilemma.
I see Torchwatch needed some clarification too - and as three nude answers apparently came from here (and as such a surprise to you) I am still confused that we do not read those three replies in this thread.

Had to settle for a 6 foot fence due to zoning laws. Enough privacy to swim and sun naked, but need to wear something when vaccuuming the pool and other chores inside the deck since I could be seen from 2 neighbors decks. Did this mostly in my speedo solars last summer, but would like to try something briefer next year. Can anyone here recommend a minimal front pouck, half back, string side suit? Don't plan to swim in it, but use only to avoid being seen naked if a neighbor happens to be on their deck when I am doing chores.

I wasn't around when you initially posted, Minimalist75... but I absolutely love tan lines. And racer cut tan lines, I think, are the best.

So, here is my belated vote for true 'speedo' tanlines.

By the way, I also am on a nudist board (another new exploration to me, this year) and one guy shuns the typical nudist thinking on the topic and purposely preserves his swim brief tanlines. They look awesome!

I have had a private yard and pool for many years and since I am in the desert it is used virtually 12 months. I have pretty much have just gone with the moment. If i am going out for sun and tanning, I am generally in the nude or a g-string. (I prefer not having lines) If I am working around the house or in the garage I usually wear a nylon suit (speedo or Aussiebum) so that if I get hot I can jump in the pool and it is dry in seconds.
As far as the issue with being surprised. I figure if they don't have the courtesy to call ahead they can see me in whatever i have or don't have on. The pool man, the gardener, mailman, ups guy, pizza delivery and any friend that would be dropping by know that they will probably catch me nude, in a g-string or a speedo. Since I see the same one every time I have extended an "open pool" policy with them that they can take a dip in the pool to cool off (welcomed by all in the summer when temps top 110) I have suits by the pool if they prefer, but when they ring my bell they know what to expect.
As the UPS guy told me long ago "Dude, it is your house and if yo are comfortable nude or in skimpy suits, go for it."
As an after thought, everyone I know is aware that speedo are my swimsuit of choice since I have never worn anything else. If you are a closet speedo guy this plan may not work for you. Always remember, if they come by and surprise you, turn around is fair play.

I really like the look and feel of this one from BodyAware. In has a minimal front, string sides, and a Brazilian/tanga rear cut. Very shiny fabric, so even though you won't be swimming in it, it still looks like you just got out of the pool because of the fabric. Oh, and despite it having a metallic look to it, the fabric is very soft and pliable and really conforms to your shape, if you know what I mean. Mine is the blue one, but I also love the looks of the silver one.

(I am not posting my own pics of this one because this suit, especially, looks awful on my huge body. Someday I will lose weight, then share that pic.)

Minimal suit
 

Went with skinzwear. Got a string side Rio and sunseaker. Latter is just two narrow panels that barely cover the crack and "goods" held together by strings on the sides. Other has somewhat more material front and back with string sides. Having second thoughts about wearing them where I could be seen by a neighbor on their deck.

post pics or links of the swimsuits you went with. being that its in a pool area i cant say i see much reason not to wear what you like. maybe post a picture of your yard and neighbors so we can all see what you are talking about

At this point, I never wear anything inside the pool enclosure when only my wife and I are home, and usually not when my son is here also.
I have 3 suits for when we have company, one brief, one short trunk, and one moderate swim shorts, all tan through. They are lighter weight and therefor less confining and quicker drying than regular suits.

How old is your sun and what was his reaction when he discovered your nude swimming and sunning. Has he joined in naked while you are there ?

He is 37. While he is working full time, he doesn't make enough to rent an apartment.
When I told him I didn't intend to wear anything in the pool enclosure, he was not happy about it.
Him going nude in the pool would not be an option unless my wife was not home, as it would make her uncomfortable.

Further Update
 

I have also only worn a swimsuit on a beach in NJ twice in the past 2 years. Went to the nude beach about a dozen times. I do wear swimwear when traveling.

Last Summer
 

Had to wear a swimsuit more than usual since our grandson spent most of the summer here. Trunks wore out and are not replaced. I have found two swimsuits sufficient.

At least in Britain, the legal requirements are to cover your todger, but you can wear a g-string so I wear that and don't worry too much. I just love having a nice overall tan. I stayed at a nudist accommodation once, and enjoyed the compliments!

It is a tan through micro brief from Kiniki, very comfortable and dries very quickly...

I tried a Kiniki micro but the top of my pubes and crack were visible so I decided I needed something with more coverage.
Kiniki regular bikini worked fine.
Decided I also needed short swim shorts for some occasions so I got one from Cooltan and found the material to be more comfortable.
When the Kiniki brief wore out, I replaced it with one from Cooltan. Less coverage than Kiniki regular brief, but more than micro and does completely cover the crack and pubes.
I now have just the 2 tan through swim suits, down from a total of about 6 before we got the privacy fence.

Summer of 2020
 

Despite having to wear a swimsuit more that usual I did accomplish two things in my quest of not wearing one.
I only went to the nude beach this summer.
After 2 or 3 years of going back and forth, my wife agreed that it was OK for me to swim and sun nude when she had one of her frequent visitors in the house, as long as the back curtains were closed.

I love the looks of this suit!! You wear it well!!
