What age will you wear Speedos to?
At my local pool yesterday there were just two guys wearing Speedos. One who was probably in his late 50s, and myself being age 50. There are 2 reasons why I wear Speedos at this late stage. 1) I'm not as self-conscious as I used to be, and 2) I'm in reasonably good shape, but how long will that last? I'm just trying to make the most of what opportunities there still are.
Anyway - I never seem to see men under 50 who wear these, so maybe the question should be - at what age will you start wearing Speedos? :) |
No reason to stop
I see no reason to stop because of age. I swim with guys of all ages, up to in their 70's and they all look great. Sure the older guys look older, but as you say they are in great shape, fit, and probably better physically than much younger guys. One of the guys in his 60's still has rocking awesome abs...
Keep on... |
what age....
most interresting remark Bede..... hopwfully you will get many responses.(opinions)

nice question. I think, for "closeted" speedo fans like me it should be a question we always must think about. I never wore speedos openly and asked myself the same question, why I don't have the bloody courage to wear them. even in the swimming clases I wear those long shorts, even knowing they don't help much when swimming. sometimes I'm afraid some stupid people will say stupid things about me but, why I should care about them?
well this is my case and answering your question: What age will you wear Speedos to? well, I'm 28, I should do it as soon as possible! And no age is late to start wearing them! |
forget it-your not that important
Guy's Just who do you think gives a damned whether you wear speedos or not?! Nobody but you. The universe is more than 10 billion years old and you think you are the center of the world! Get over it. Just put them on. Pull on a swim head cover-loop your googles under your suit and walk confidently to the pool-the only ones that are going to really notice are the people who admire you because you did it. My advice for the suit-start off a little conservitive with 2 1/2 to 3 inch sides. Make sure the butt crack is barely coverd and pube hair is covered. Forget about your dick-it's what it is-everybody knows you got one. Stop and speak to the guard and the person in the next lane-walk around the pool-you'll begin to feel relaxed and wonder what you thought the big fuss was going to be. There won't be any.
|
LOL aren't old guys with pot bellies known for wearing speedos?? Personally as long as my stomach is flat enough that I can look straight down and see my suit, I will wear them. It will give me an incentive to stay in shape as I age and hopefully look younger for doing so.

Twenty years ago it was normal for men to wear them, but it's not so much the case now. So you can be secure in the knowledge that you're not doing something that hasn't been done before, and it's not compulsory to follow fashion. |
Im still pretty young and I dont see any reason to ever stop. Ill probably not wear co many crazy styles later in life tho.
|
I'm in my late 60's in reasonably decent shape and I still wear speedos and don't plan to stop anytime soon.

Knikon, don't give up the crazy styles later.... That is what makes getting new swimsuits fun. Never too old to rock a cool swimsuit.
|
Can't see me ever wearing board shorts. Hard enough doing the lengths when you're getting older, without being dragged down in the water by those garments.
|
I think the important thing is that you do what makes you feel good and also comfortable. Especially as we get older and when some of us enter the retirement years, we need to take care of ourselves, both physically and mentally. If wearing speedos makes you feel good, do it and don't be concerned with what others say. They are at fault for being rude and insensitive. I wouldn't suggest wearing a thong at a family pool or beach because of the presence of kids, but wear that speedo or bikini and use discretion in which one of your collection you choose.

Not sure I'd want to wear one in the USA. See video link of girls and boys jumping off a cliff into water:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn09g1bwgDc You would think they were a different species. |

I'm surprised you were allowed to wear boardshorts to swim lessons, where I am you'd be denied entering the pool to attend swimming lessons. You'll realise once you've worn a pair of briefs or jammers that it actually is not as bad as you think it is, in fact you'll realise (dare I say this) you were the numpty in the 1st place for not wearing the ideal swimwear. Yeah I know easier said than done, its why I love the Nike saying "Just do it" |
numpty
So, where exactly is "where I am"?

if you lived here , in Lima, Peru, South America, you'll understand why "just do it" would be a bad idea when wearing swimwear, dear Chris. :D |
location?
Where exactly? - a boardies ban make me guess France and numpty Scotland :D
|
I didn't think Peru was as conservative about swimwear as they are. I thank you ,thisweirdthing1985, for making me aware of the situation.

Conservative Peru
thisweirdthing1985,
I know that Brazil and Argentina are not at all conservative about swimsuits. Do you know if other South American countries are more like Peru or Brazil? D67 |

well, I think many people tend to think that because Rio is a sunga paradise, then all south america is also speedo-friendly. you know, not even all brazil is speedo freindly as I have read in some brazilian forums, in portuguese. some other cities are more conservative and even - while in rio carnival you'll see almost naked women - in other cities some girls will be banned for wearing miniskirts. some news suprised us a lot in south ameirca, that a girl in some brazilian city, very far from the coast, was banned of enter the university class, because she was wearing a revealing miniskirt, many people asked themselves, what ?? Brazil?.... yes, Brazil. not all Brazil is Rio. I had the opportunity to visit some countries in south america, and I have to say, in order from less to more speedo friendly, from my experience of going to the beach, my list goes like this: 1.(less)Peru/Bolivia 2.Chile 3.Argentina (still not so speedo friendly) 4.Uruguay 5.(more) Colombia (not speedo paradise but still very acceptable, saw many men in speedos with wife and kids) nerver been to brazil, but hope one day I will :) by the way it's interesting to see many football players/musicians/artists from Peru wearing sungas when on vacations in Rio or in some caribbean island, but never seen in speedos in our beaches. bonus; I was once in Punta Cana , Dominican Republic (not s. america, but still latin country) and I can say, at least in the resorts, you can wear whatever you want. saw many russians in speedos (knew they were russians because they were reading books written in the russian alphabet :p ) |
cultural variations....
Thanks for such a detailed survey - you even spotted some cyrillic* and 'Rio is not Brazil' is applicable to many other countries too :)
*in use in twelve countries in fact |
Thanks for you reply thisweirdthing1985. Very interesting how different countries with similar cultures have different codes of dress relating to swimsuits.
D67 |
Thank you for the information thisweirdthing1985. I would have thought Chile to be more male brief swimsuit friendly.

Forgot to ask - Can the average Spanish-speaking visitor cope sufficiently with the Portuguese to enable a conversation? (and vice versa)

I will quite wearing speedos when I am dead and buried...

Why quit then? You could get buried in your favorite Speedo, if you were so inclined. |
I told my family I wanted to be buried in my favorite Speedo but they said NO.

No age to stop wearing speedos
Quote:
I don't really know what age I'll wear speedos to, but now I'm over 70 and still wearing my nylon Aussiebums. I do have to say that altho I'm getting a bit saggy, I'm in decent shape and am naturally hairless, so the effect is not too bad. I say this because there is some opposition to older men wearing speedos, especially over weight ones. But really, is an old guy in a speedo any worse looking than if he had his gut spilling over the waistband of a pair of baggy, wrinkled knee length shorts? Age is not a reason to stop wearing speedos. |
"I will quite wearing speedos when I am dead and buried..."
During the "Troubles" a 12 year old boy in an English city went to town to buy a pair of football (soccer) shorts, short shiny nylon ones in those days. Passing a rubbish/trash bin he was killed by a bomb left by the IRA in the bin. He was buried in his new shorts. Best not to provoke the Gods. |
People notice older men in speedos not because there is anything wrong in their wearing them but because younger men have not been wearing them.
Whatever your age it is better to wear functional sportswear rather than indifferent fashion rags. |
Warrington 1993
Young Tim Parry was a keen Everton supporter and surgeons operated on him for three hours.
Only the life-support machine kept him breathing and he died of his injuries five days later. Not sure what Gods were provoked in this case but the post seems to be in rather poor taste in this thread. |
I have always worn speedos and intend to continue to do so. As I mature I avoid the bright colors and patterns and extremely skimpy suits for when I am at public pools or beaches (At my home pool - anything goes) As long as my stomach remains flat, I see no problem with my 2 or 3" side suits on an older man. However, there is nothing more disturbing than an 80 year old male (or female) in a thong with their boney ass hanging out!

a ticket....
LOL - I guess the opposite of bony is the problem here:

my dads 72 and still wears them. I think ill be wearing them for ever. Its not a looks thing anyways, i hate boardies, plain and simple
|
Quote:
I'm with you and your dad, Turbofan. I'll be 72 in 4 short years and plan to be wearing briefs then and long after. I don't like boardies in general and not on me, but I must admit that some guys wearing boardies low on their hips look pretty hot. D67 |
It's not easy swimming lots of laps in the pool as you get older, so the last thing I need is being dragged down with board shorts.
|
keeping it simple....
Being Turbofan Snr's age my aesthetic drawback is spindly legs and boardies are of little help in coverage there - in fact they may even emphasise them, especially when wet.
